Student Performers Shine at Steinway Gala Concert
By Timothy P. Cross
Twenty student musicians performed for more than 100 students,
family members, alumni, faculty and administrators at the
third annual Steinway Gala Concert, held on Thursday, April
4, 2002, at Steinway Hall on West 57th St. in Manhattan.
The students, who are all members of the University's Music
Performance Program, performed seven pieces, ranging from
Johannes Brahms's "Quintet in B Minor for Clarinet and
Strings" and J.S. Bach's "Trio from the Musical
Offering in C Minor" to contemporary composer Rodion
Schedrin's "Humoresque in the Style of Albeniz."
Although all are gifted performers, the majority of the students
who performed are pursuing degrees in other fields, such as
biology, Russian, history, classics, and math.
Dean of the College Austin Quigley spoke before the concert.
He noted the tradition of music education at Columbia, most
clearly embodied in the Music Humanities course of the College's
Core curriculum, and praised the Music Performance Program
for helping students take advantage of the resources available
at the University and in New York City. Music Performance
Program Director Deborah Bradley, who organized the concert,
and Professor of Music Elaine Sisman also spoke before the
performances.
The Music Performance Program seeks to enable students to
develop as musicians within Columbia's academic setting by
providing and facilitating opportunities for musical instruction,
participation, and performance. The program offers private
instrumental lessons and sponsors performing ensembles.
