Columbia College Women
Columbia College Women (CCW) supports, promotes and acknowledges the professional, personal and Columbia-related accomplishments of women graduates of the College. Founded in 1993, CCW now serves a membership in excess of 2,000 alumnae in the greater New York metropolitan area.
To further these objectives, CCW focuses on three areas:
-
Networking/Career. To provide opportunities for women to share ideas, find new opportunities, and help each other attain success. Examples include CCW "Nights Out," mentoring, career seminars, and industry panels and receptions.
-
Community Building. To bring alumnae together for fun, community service, and women-specific activities. Examples include "Race for the Cure," mentoring, the CCW Book Group (the Bookies), self-defense classes and "Movie Night at Bryant Park".
-
Alumnae Visibility. To provide visibility and recognition to women within the greater Columbia College alumni community. Examples include the Alumna Achievement Award and CCW's senior women's brunch.
CCW Executive Committee
The
Executive Committee determines CCW's budget, activities, and
programs. It consists of the CCW chair and the chairs of committees.
Executive Committee meetings are held quarterly, usually in
March, June, September and December, with elections at the
June meeting. The incoming and the outgoing Executive Committees
together elect the new CCW chair.

Committees
The alumnae, students, faculty and administrators who make up Columbia College Women achieve their goals through the work of various committees.
Alumna Achievement Award
This committee works closely with the Columbia College alumni
affairs office to solicit nominations of CC alumna who have
made significant contributions in their work field or community.
The committee convenes to select one recipient per year. It
is the responsibility of the chair or nominator to notify
the award recipient to accept the award on the condition she
can attend the award reception. The committee also arranges
the keynote speaker for the event. Ideally the speaker should
be related to the field of the award recipient.
This year's Alumna Achievement Award will be on March 30, 2005 in Alfred Lerner Hall.
Bookies
The book club meets once a month to discuss a book of its
choosing. Locations vary every month but are decided at the
previous meeting. Book selections are chosen by nominations
from the group. For more information contact Shira Boss-Bicak
CC'93 at shiraboss@yahoo.com.
Change of Life
The goal of this committee is to plan specific programming
that will address the issues facing women at different points
of their lives. Whether it's getting out of debt, changing
careers, purchasing property or motherhood to name a few.
Committee members will plan and execute program with Columbia
College alumni affairs office.
Mentoring
The goal of this committee is to air alumna with current college
undergraduate juniors and seniors as mentors/mentees. The
committee solicits applications from both alumna and students,
asking both to fill out a survey. The information is used
to match pairs. The committee notifies both parties of the
pairing and plans the programming for the kickoff event. Past
programming has included mentor panels and roundtable discussions.
The committee also plans one event in the spring for the pairs.
Social
This traditional committee plans all social aspects including
cultural, academic and athletic outings. Past events have
included trips to museums, walk for causes such as Revlon,
and happy hours.
If you are interested in joining one of these committees or
submitting proposals for future events, please e-mail ccw@columbia.edu.
Mentoring
Columbia College Women, which has one of the most successful mentoring programs at the College, has teamed up the Columbia College E-Community, the CollegeĀ's online service for alumni, to put CCW Mentoring online. Alumnae who wish to become mentors should (1) update their profiles in the E-Community and (2) join the CCW Mentoring community within the E-Community to indicate their interest. Members of the CCW Mentoring Committee assign mentors to students this fall.
Join the E-Community.
Alumna Achievement Award
The Alumna Achievement Award is Columbia College Women's highest honor. It is presented each year to an alumna who has demonstrated excellence in her field and has made a significant contribution to Columbia College and its community at large.
