A specialist in commercial real estate lending, Milstein
received his M.B.A. from NYU in 1974 and went to work at his
family's real estate management company. He became Emigrant's
vice chairman and director in 1987, after the bank was acquired,
and assumed his current role in 1993. Milstein, who was elected
a University Trustee in 1996, has distinguished himself in
virtually every area of endeavor possible for an alumnus.
He received the Alumni Federation Medal in 1993 and the John
Jay Award for Distinguished Professional Achievement in 1996.
His $10 million gift to the University in 1998 was instrumental
in making possible the renovation of Butler Library, where
the first three floors are now known as the Philip L. Milstein
Family College Library.
In his remarks before the medal presentation, Dean of the
College Austin Quigley praised Milstein as "someone who sets
a standard for all of us." University President George Rupp
described Milstein as "an exemplar of loyal and creative action
on behalf of the future of the College."
In accepting the medal from President Rupp, a gracious Milstein
remarked, "This is the dream of every Columbia College alumnus."
The dinner co-chairs were Milstein's classmate, Mark Kingdon
'71, and his fellow University Trustee, Richard Witten '75.
The large turnout to honor Milstein matched last year's record
attendance, when William V. Campbell '62, chairman of Intuit
and former Columbia Lions football coach, received the Hamilton
Medal.
The Columbia College Alumni Association presents the Alexander
Hamilton Medal, which is recognized as the College's highest
honor, to an alumnus or faculty member for distinguished service
and accomplishment in any field of endeavor.
