Undergraduate Requirements

For a Special Concentration in Human Rights

The human rights special concentration is not a stand-alone concentration: it is intended to serve as a complement to the disciplinary specialization and methodological training inherent in a major. In addition to the requirements of the special concentration, students must complete a major or a full concentration.

The human rights special concentration is not a stand-alone concentration: it is intended to serve as a complement to the disciplinary specialization and methodological training inherent in a major. In addition to the requirements of the special concentration, students must complete a major.

Students wishing to complete a special concentration in human rights may contact the program director at any time for assistance. Detailed rules and guidance are available at http://hrcolumbia.org/undergraduate/.

A total of seven courses (22 pts minimum) are required:

  1. HRTS V3001 (generally taken in the first or second year of study)
  2. Five courses from a list of courses (posted to the program website every semester) that count automatically for other courses by permission of the program director. In the latter case, courses are not approved one by one, but as part of a student-chosen theme or "track" within the field of human rights.
  3. HRTS W3996

Students may count two of the seven courses for the special concentration toward their major or concentration.
