The Division of Visual Arts provides interdisciplinary training in studio art as a part of a liberal education and as preparation for graduate study and professional work.

To graduate as a major in visual arts, a student will have been recommended by the faculty committee reviewing portfolios of students seeking entry into the major and will have completed a total of 47 points in the foundations curriculum, visual arts studio courses including the senior project, the colloquium, and related courses. The senior project is comprised of Senior thesis I and II and Visiting critic I and II.

It is strongly recommended that students apply for the major in the spring of their sophomore year or the fall of their junior year by submitting a portfolio of work completed within the division for review by a committee of Visual Arts Division faculty. In exceptional cases, arrangements for a special review toward the end of the junior year may be made with Professor Gregory Amenoff.

Registration

Students may register for visual arts courses only after the first class.   Students must attend the first class and gain approval from the professor to register, then may register online.

Students must complete prerequisite classes before admittance into intermediate-level courses. A student may petition the division for advanced placement and waive the prerequisites by submitting a portfolio and/or slides of work done independently to the division during the change-of-program period. Two members of the faculty will review submissions and make a determination of standing. Advanced placement does not change the number of credits needed to complete the major or concentration, nor does it guarantee course placement.
