Ruth DeFries, the Denning Professor of Sustainable Development and professor of ecology, evolution and environmental biology, and professor of philosophy Christopher Peacocke were among four Columbia faculty members elected this year to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, one of the nation’s most prestigious and oldest honorary societies. They were joined by Nicholas Lemann, dean of the Journalism School, and Peter Strauss, the Betts Professor of Law. They will be inducted on Saturday, October 9, at the academy’s headquarters in Cambridge, Mass.
