Map of the extent of the British Empire, John Charles Ready Colomb, 1886 CE.

“Imperial Federation, map of the world showing the extent of the British Empire in 1886, by John Charles Ready Colomb, 1886 CE.

Originally appearing in the popular illustrated magazine, “The Graphic,” this map combines dry geographical and statistical information with an elaborate program of pro-imperial illustrations. At the bottom-center, the personification of Britain, Britannia, literally sits on top of the world. Compare the sea lanes traced on this map with the route of Darwin’s voyages on the HMS Beagle.  (You can zoom in on details in this map at http://maps.bpl.org/id/M8682/
