Special Programs

Columbia offers a variety of special study abroad programs, exchange programs, and special courses of study for students interested in health and teaching, as well as several joint graduate and professional programs.

Study Abroad

Every Columbia student should give serious consideration to studying overseas. Whatever career students choose, international opportunities will expand enormously during their lifetime and the experience gained through study abroad will prove invaluable. Achieving cultural literacy in another country—some substantive understanding of another perspective on the world—will moreover deepen their understanding of themselves, their own society, and their values.

To be eligible for participation in a Columbia-approved study abroad program, students must be in good academic standing with at least a 3.0 GPA and be making progress toward finishing the Core Curriculum. The Core language requirement must be completed and advanced language prerequisites may apply. Study abroad candidates must complete at least one course pertaining to the country or region where they intend to study. College transfer students should note that they are allowed no more than 60 points of outside credit, and they may therefore only be able to attend a Columbia-sponsored, off-campus study program. Students interested in studying abroad should visit the Fellowships and Study Abroad Office (105 Carman) as early as possible to discuss their plans.

  1. No credit is granted for courses in business, education, journalism, or other subjects that at Columbia are taught only in professional schools.

  2. Credit is not given for courses taken on a Pass/Fail basis. The minimum grade necessary for transfer of credit is C–.

Students are reminded that the last two semesters required for the degree must be taken while enrolled in the College for study on this campus, at Reid Hall in Paris, at the Berlin Consortium, or at the Tsinghua program in Beijing. Any exceptions require special permission from the Committee on Academic Standing.

It is generally possible to arrange for study in most foreign countries through programs sponsored by other American universities or occasionally through direct application to the foreign university. Such studies may be approved for one to two terms in the junior year. Students may petition for a third term, but this is only approved on a case-by-case basis. Students interested in such programs should consult with the Fellowships and Study Abroad Office (105 Carman), the Office of Global Programs (204 Lewisohn), and with their major department.

Students must be cleared to study abroad by the assistant dean of study abroad and must register with the Office of Global Programs before November 15 for the spring semester and April 15 for the fall semester. Clearance and registration forms are available in the Office of Fellowships and Study Abroad, the Office of Global Programs, the Center for Student Advising, and on-line.

While abroad, students remain enrolled at Columbia College and tuition is paid to Columbia. Columbia in turn pays the academic costs of the foreign program up to, but not exceeding, the cost of Columbia’s tuition. Students are separately financially responsible for room and board as well as any other miscellaneous costs. Students who wish to be considered for financial aid while studying abroad should consult the Office of Financial Aid and Educational Financing, 407 Lerner. Students receiving financial aid at Columbia will remain eligible for financial aid when they study abroad with Columbia’s approval.
