Academic Advising
Advising Resources
Columbia
offers students a comprehensive advising system, combining one-on-one
advising with a variety of supplemental outreach resources and services.
A central goal of the College’s multiple-source advising program
is to enable
students to acquire several personal advisers along with several supplementary
advisers. To assist students in finding their way among these, extensive
advising resources have been aggregated withing the Advising
Resources @ Columbia Web site. The site presents the following:
-
Available advisers, resources, and opportunities, enabling students
to understand holistically the wealth of resources available at Columbia
College.
-
A detailed explanation of why the College has a multiple-source
advising system, how it works, and how students can get the most
out of it.
-
A vast amount of information about programs and advisers
that will help students locate the right kind of adviser for a
particular kind of question.
-
A “major comparison” tool,
which analyzes all majors in terms of the same set of basic questions,
so that students can compare academic programs in detail as a prelude
to talking to advisers about particular majors.
-
Multiple tools
providing different access points to advising resources and presenting
the cohesive linkages between resources.
NOTE: In most departments,
a faculty adviser is assigned to majors and concentrators in
their junior and senior years.
