Alexia Foundation Student Grants provide educational opportunities and/or monetary and in-kind benefits to help students produce bodies of photographic or multimedia work that share the Foundation’s goals of promoting world peace and cultural understanding. Applicants are encouraged (but not required) to consider projects that explore cultural understanding in or near their local community.
Grants are awarded in the form of ranked prizes, and benefits vary slightly for undergraduate and graduate student recipients. Top awards include full or partial tuition waivers participation in Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, which features several opportunities tailored for students in photography. All awards include a stipend and gift card to assist with project production and purchase of supplies.
All candidates must be enrolled full-time in accredited college or university degree programs in the U.S. or abroad, either as undergraduate or graduate students. The Foundation favors candidates who have not yet had significant professional experience—students who have one year of full-time professional experience in a related field are ineligible.
Alexia Grants were established to help promote world peace and cultural understanding, and the strength of each proposal will be given the same emphasis as a candidate’s photographic skills. Winning recipients will be those who provide strong story proposals with portfolios that exhibit the photographic ability to execute a story at the highest level. Photographs submitted with a proposal may be about the proposal’s subject or from previous projects of a similar type.
