Gates Cambridge Scholarships are highly competitive full-cost scholarships awarded to outstanding applicants from countries outside the U.K. to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge.  The program aims to build a global network of future leaders committed to improving the lives of others. To date, the Gates Cambridge Scholarship has supported over 1,000 scholars from 90 countries.

A Gates Cambridge Scholarship covers the full cost of studying at Cambridge.  Core components include the University Composition fee and College fees, a maintenance allowance of £14, 600 for twelve months (2016-2017 rate), and round-trip airfare to and from the U.K.

To be eligible for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship, an applicant must be a citizen of any country outside the U.K. and either:

  • applying to pursue a full-time residential Ph.D. (three-year research-only degree), M.Sc. or M.Litt. (two-year research-only degree), or a one-year postgraduate course; or
  • already a student at Cambridge and applying for a new postgraduate course—for example, a student in an M.Phil. course can apply for a scholarship to do a Ph.D., but may not apply for a scholarship to continue a degree program he or she has already started; or
  • already a Gates Cambridge Scholar and applying for a second scholarship—such students must apply by the second (international) deadline and go through the same process of departmental ranking, short-listing, and interviewing as all other candidates.

Certain courses are ineligible for scholarship support:  B.A. (undergraduate), B.A. affiliated (second or honors B.A.), M.B.B.Chir. Clinical Studies, part-time degrees, non-degree courses, and courses at other universities.

While there is no one template that describes a Gates Cambridge Scholar, the program does look for four critical criteria in identifying future scholars:  academic excellence, a good fit with Cambridge, leadership potential, and a commitment to working for the greater good.

Please note: The Gates-Cambridge Scholarship application is included as part of the application to Cambridge University. However, we request you register your intent to apply for the Gates-Cambridge Scholarship here as a student or alumni of CC, SEAS, or GS, in order to allow our office to better communicate with you while you undergo the official Gates-Cambridge application process. For details on the official Gates-Cambridge Scholarship required submission materials and official deadlines for both US and non-US citizens, please see the Gates-Cambridge website.
