GHC will recruit and match partner organizations that have specific needs with recent University graduates with requisite skills. Partner organizations will identify an area of their operations that stands to benefit from a fellowship team. Assignments for GHC fellows will have specific parameters, with a timeline and defined metrics for success. Fellows will be chosen for specific assignments following an extensive application and interview process. They will be selected based on their experience, character, and knowledge, and based on their possession of the specific skills necessary to accomplish the designated assignment. Each fellowship team will be composed of at least one pair of fellows, one from the United States and one from the country where the partner organization works.
Although GHC fellows will be selected based on their possession of the specific skills required for their assignments, all fellows will complete a rigorous Summer Training Institute sponsored by Stanford University’s Center for Health Policy from July 19th through August 1st, 2009 consisting of basic coursework in global health, along with language, culture, and leadership courses. In the months leading up to the Institute, fellows will be assigned reading materials related to their country, their partner organization, and their specific project. GHC will also work with partner organizations to conduct in-country orientations at the beginning of each assignment to help fellows settle in for their terms.
GHC will provide funding for each fellowship team to live and work with its partner organization for one year on the specific assignment identified by the organization. GHC will also provide fellows with logistical support and professional mentors, but to ensure that fellows work effectively within their organizations, partner organizations will provide fellows with day-to-day operational supervision and support.
During and after the fellowship period, GHC staff will work with partner organizations to evaluate the success of the program, and determine whether and how to place a new fellowship team for the next year. GHC fellows will reconvene to engage in meaningful post-field reflection together. During the gathering, fellows will have the opportunity to build on the lessons they learned in the field, to grapple with perceived successes and failures, meet with mentors for career guidance, and discuss how they will translate their experiences into plans for the future. GHC fellows will then enter the alumni corps, joining their mentors and partner organizations in building a meaningful network of future global health leaders.
