The Institute for Social and Economic Research and Policy’s Scholars Program for Undergraduates offers unique research opportunities to a select group of highly qualified undergraduate students in the social sciences. The environment provided to scholars is designed to maximize interaction with the university’s top professors and other research-focused undergraduates, as well as to teach and develop methodological and technical skills. Applicants should have an interest in pursuing interdisciplinary research in either a professional or postgraduate setting.
The positions last up to a year and provide participants with direct access to Columbia’s largest interdisciplinary research institute. Undergraduate scholars will participate in weekly seminars, in-the-field research, training programs in research techniques and one-on-one faculty mentorships. The program also offers participants financial and material support and access to the ISERP undergraduate and media labs.
Students can choose one of four areas of focus:
- Independent Interdisciplinary Research —This area of focus pairs undergraduates with a top Columbia professor to conduct research jointly that in turn informs an individual research project of the participant’s choosing. Participants will also develop research techniques through workshops, seminars and interaction with undergraduates from across the social sciences.
- International Development & Globalization Workshop — This workshop introduces students to development policy by identifying a specific real-world project in Kenya and conducting research there. Students will utilize their unique disciplinary backgrounds to conceptualize issues, with an emphasis on real-world problem solving.
- Urban Research Workshop — The urban research fellowship fosters a collaborative approach to research and culminates with an in-the-field research project in Brooklyn. URW students choose a lens through which they will contribute to the project to add depth and dimension to a policy issue.
- Multimedia & Filmmaking Workshop — This program trains undergraduates in emerging research dissemination techniques. Selected participants will work directly with ISERP researchers and staff, helping to produce content that reflects ISERP’s mission and research. Over the course of the year participants will complete an individual project, as well as up to four shorter projects each semester. *Selected fellows should have some background and training in multimedia and filmmaking.
