George J. Mitchell Scholarships aim to introduce future American leaders to the island of Ireland while recognizing and fostering their intellectual achievement, leadership, and commitment to community and public service. Up to twelve Mitchell Scholars are chosen annually for one year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Each Mitchell Scholarship provides tuition, accommodation, a living stipend, and an international travel stipend. The program also sponsors cohort-building activities throughout the year with each class of Mitchell Scholars.
Mitchell Scholarship candidates must be U.S. citizens between the ages of 18 and 30 and have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university (not necessarily in the U.S.) before taking up the scholarship. Candidates do not need to apply for admission to their preferred academic programs in Ireland or Northern Ireland.
University nomination: Columbia University may nominate currently enrolled seniors of Columbia College, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, and the School of General Studies to this competition. Current undergraduates may not apply directly for this fellowship without first having been nominated. Recent graduates who are in their second year of graduate study at the time of application must be nominated by their graduate institution. Recent graduates who are in their first year of graduate study or not enrolled in any graduate program may request Columbia nomination, but they may also choose to apply directly.
To apply: Please register your Mitchell candidacy with Columbia University by completing the internal application available here (click "Start an Application" to open the electronic questionnaire) no later than the deadline stated. You should arrange for your letters of recommendation to be submitted to firstname.lastname@example.org by this deadline as well.
