CPLT G4000. Spaces of Globalization. 3 pts. Examines the multiple spaces of globalization from an anthropological and architectural/urbanistic perspective, through a combination of theoretical readings and case studies.

CPLT W4025. Sociology of the Image. 3 pts. Explores the social functioning of images in the representation of self and others in the imagining of communities and nations in a colonial and postcolonial context. Combines theoretical readings on iconography with practical exercises in the sociological observation of iconographic, performative, and oral source materials, examples from Latin America, Asia and Africa.

Case study in creative writing across linguistic and cultural boundaries in a colonial and post-colonial situation. Readings from a wide variety of African writers. Focus on the writings and multi-media practice of Kofi Anyidoho.

CPLT G4200. Spectacle Culture(S): the Aesthetics of Exorbitance From the Baroque To the Postmodern. 3 pts. An interdisciplinary examination of the mechanisms and ideological effects of spectacle culture, with particular attention to the aesthetics of exorbitance that governs its textual productions and its attempt to spectacularize all dimensions of the life-world from the environment to self-fashioning.
