Stars of the hotly anticipated summer movie Barbie, including Hari Nef ’15 and Kate McKinnon ’06, appeared on the upcoming July 24 cover of Time. Barbie, which opens on July 21, is directed by Greta Gerwig BC’06.


On July 11, Columbia baseball catcher Weston Eberly ’23 was selected by the Chicago White Sox with pick No. 479 in the 16th round of the 2023 Major League Baseball Draft. The Maitland, Fla., native is the 12th player during head coach Brett Boretti’s tenure to be drafted by a Major League Baseball franchise and the 30th player in program history to be selected in the draft.

Ebon Moss-Bachrach ’99 was the subject of a June 20 New York Times feature, “Ebon Moss-Bachrach Plays a Prickly Fan Favorite in ‘The Bear.’” Moss-Bachrach plays Richie in the hit FX series, now in its second season; he also recently starred in Disney’s Rogue One prequel, Andor.

Nusrat Choudhury

Nusrat Choudhury ’98

On June 16 it was announced that Nusrat Choudhury ’98 was confirmed by the Senate as a federal judge in New York. Choudhury is now the first female Muslim American and the first Bangladeshi American to hold that distinction; she was until recently the legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois.


The June 9 New York Times article “24 Works of Fiction to Read This Summer” included Jamel Brinkley ’97, GSAS’07’s new book, Witness: Stories. Set in contemporary New York, it features characters “who must decide whether to speak up, take action or remain silent bystanders in everyday situations with lasting consequences.”
