A Dublin beach that seemed never to end, a dance show and djembe drum class in Victoria Falls — these are two of the scenes that took first place in the Center for Undergraduate Global Engagement’s 2023 photo contest. The annual competition invites students to submit snapshots from their study abroad experiences. “I think anyone doing a bit of traveling should make sure to do some of it alone,” says Lilienne Shore Kilgore-Brown ’24 (photo above), who spent time “walking, walking, walking” on a solo side trip to Ireland. Esther Mafouta March ’24 (photo below) summed up the joy of her semester abroad: “When I think back, I remember the unfettered happiness I felt, the friends I made, the food I ate and the adventures I went on.” Get the stories behind their winning images and more at college.columbia.edu.
