Sharing Passions with Neighbors

New special interest housing enhances students’ residential experiences

Special Interest Communities offer students a unique opportunity to live together while exploring common interests and connecting with faculty, administrators, alumni and community leaders. This year, Undergraduate Student Life’s Residential Life team opened a new Special Interest Community House on West 113th Street with five new communities housed within: Application Development Initiative, Columbia Pre-Health, Creative Commons, Manhattan House and Wellness House. SIC House allows students with diverse passions — from technical innovation and development, to health care, to collaborative creation, to issues for indigenous peoples, to building a campus community that promotes wellness — to come together to explore one another’s interests and to build community across campus. These new special interest communities join others around campus, including Casa Latin@, Community Health House, GreenBorough, Jazz House, Metta House, Pan-African House, Potluck House, Q House, Students for Substance Free Space and Writers House.

“Our weekly dinner is an opportunity for people from all the different communities to share a meal … I think everyone who lives in SIC House wants to know everyone else who lives in SIC House.”

Julian NoiseCat ’15, student coordinator of Manhattan House
