The Columbia University Board of Trustees announced that attorney Jonathan D. Schiller ’69, LAW’73, P: ’01, ’06, CE’13 was elected co-chair of the board, to serve alongside current chair William V. Campbell ’62, TC’64, P: ’04, ’13. Schiller will succeed Campbell as chair upon the latter’s retirement from the board. Schiller is a managing partner and co-founder of the law firm Boies, Schiller & Flexner, and one of the country’s most well-known and respected attorneys.

Columbia College’s Phi Beta Kappa chapter welcomed 22 new members on January 31 in an initiation ceremony attended by parents, faculty and friends. The 22 students were chosen by a faculty selection committee of Phi Beta Kappa members based on the breadth, depth and rigor of their academic programs, as well as recommendations from faculty members who have worked closely with them.

Nearly 500 named scholarship donors and student recipients filled Roone Arledge Auditorium on February 6 at the annual Dean’s Scholarship Reception. Dan Loeb ’83 spoke to students about the importance of giving back to the College and spent time with current and former scholarship recipients, including Zack Susel ’11 who introduced him to the audience. The reception gives students who receive named scholarships and the donors of those scholarships the opportunity to meet and share their College experiences.

Ten faculty members were honored with Lenfest Distinguished Teaching Awards, created in 2005 by Gerry Lenfest LAW'58, a trustee emeritus whose total donations of more than $100 million place him among Columbia's most generous benefactos. His $12 million gift for the teaching awards honors exceptional instruction and scholarship, with a special emphasis on the mentoring of students in the arts and sciences. Each year the Core Scholars Program invites any student who has taken a Core course to reflect on the materials of the Core Curriculum by creating a Core Reflection. Students who submit exceptionally creative and well executed reflections are honored as Core Scholars.

On April 25, more than 200 guests attended the Columbia College Young Alumni Fund Spring Benefit at the Racquet and Tennis Club in New York. The evening included an open bar, hors d’oeuvres, a DJ, photo booth and silent auction. Proceeds from the benefit helped to enhance financial aid, provide the resources necessary to maintain the College's renowned Core Curriculum, support improvements in student services and support summer internship stipends. Columbia officials, including President Lee C. Bollinger and Dean James J. Valentini, joined with government officials on June 15 for an official ribbon-cutting ceremony at the opening of the Columbia Startup Lab in lower Manhattan.
