René Viénet, La Dialectique peut-elle casser des briques?, 1973. (English subtitles)
In 1960s, the Situationist movement argued that capitalism persisted in part because the system (including the established Communist parties) turned lived experiences into anaesthetizing ‘spectacles’ that perpetuated alienation. As a strategy for breaking through this ‘society of the spectacle,’ René Viénet layered radical Marxist discourse over a schlocky martial arts film--delivering political education in a humorous package while forcing audiences to actively confront the mechanics of their own entertainment.
