Rather than irrationally hating all technology, the original Luddites only opposed new machines that drove down wages to starvation levels. The shop owners who issued this reward poster in 1812, the height of Luddite activity, therefore emphasized that their workers were being paid “full price” to operate the machines that had been smashed.
