Reconstruction of a Greek Trireme.

This is a reconstruction of a Greek trireme. Triremes were warships used by ancient civilizations, especially Greeks, Phoenicians and Romans. They were called triremes because they had three rows of oars on each side.

During the Peloponnesian War Athens' strength came mainly from her fleet. When the Sicilian expedition was launched, 134 triremes were prepared and sailed to Sicily.

The destruction of Athens' fleet during the naval battle at Aegospotamoi (405 BCE) was decisive in Athens' defeat in the war. The war ended the following year (April 404 BCE), as the Spartan victory in this battle forced the Athenians to surrender soon after.
