2011 Core Scholars Committee
Rachel Field (CC '14) is from Bronx, NY. She plans to major in math and statistics or neuroscience. When not in the reference room, Rachel may be found cutting up hippocampi at the Medical Center or writing New Yorker cartoon captions in her feckless attempt to win the New Yorker cartoon caption contest. After college, Rachel hopes to continue in neuroscience research.
Lia Friedman (CC '13) is a New York native studying Russian language and literature, and will be spending the next six months in St. Petersburg.
Anna Griggs, Committee Vice-Chair
Anna Griggs (GS '11) is an anthropology major. She previously attended the University of Chicago, where she was the editor-in-chief of Euphony, a biannual journal of poetry, prose, and literary criticism.
Alexander Lewis (CC '12) is a film studies major.
Veronica Mittnacht (CC '11) is a lifelong New Yorker and an English and Philosophy double-major (at least until May!) She's currently the College section editor of the online newspaper TheFasterTimes.com and has also written for TheRumpus.net, Soap Opera Digest, Flavorpill, and The New York Egotist, where she has published interviews with Dan Rather, Frank McCourt, Antonio Skármeta, Charles Siebert, and others. She presently interns at The Wylie Agency.
Artemis Shaw (CC '11) wrote the following introduction for her Lit Hum class four years ago: "Hello! My name is Artemis. I am interested in Ingmar Bergman, dadaism, and Marlon Brando (what a hunk!) I enjoy the poetry of W.B. Yeats and the novels of Graham Greene. One day I hope to be the lead singer in a Greek blues band." She studies Art History and German.
Joey Shemuel, Committee Chair
Joey (CC '11), a dyed-in-the-organic-wool liberal, grew up in Berkeley and came to Columbia College in 2007 to major in philosophy. After he graduates in May, he plans to travel around the United States and Europe for a year or two -- possibly as a documentary photographer -- and then pursue a degree in either public health or translation studies.
Erin Stahmer (CC '12) is a double major in Sustainable Development and Dance. Since her freshman year, Erin has been involved in several dance groups on campus, including Orchesis and Onyx Hip Hop Troupe, and is also an active member of the sustainable food group NOM^3. Upon graduation, Erin would like to continue to dance, but also hopes to pursue a career that incorporates sustainable development into business or city planning.
Jonathan Tanners (CC '11) majored in Film Studies because he wanted to turn his addiction to The Wire into an academic pursuit. He plans to dive into whatever is left of the music industry after college on his quest to become the next great Jewish Hip-Hop mogul.
