Following the EPPC Guidelines for Course Prefixes and Numbers, some units have taken this opportunity to reorganize the 4 digit number for some of their courses, e.g. HIST 3000 changed to HIST 3200. The change to the 4 digit number will take effect now for fall ’16 classes. (Please note that the switch to the two character prefix will be coming into effect in July 2016.)
For those units that did change the 4 digit number for courses it offers:
We have been working closely with the UNIFY team and the changes to the 4 digit number are now reflected in UNIFY. For any course that will change in number, an exact copy of the course has been made with the new 4 digit course number. There are now two versions of these courses in UNIFY:
- the original course with the old 4 digit number, and,
- the new course with the new 4 digit number.
We would like to alert you to two action items, although these may be well underway already. Please complete these by Wednesday, March 9:
- (1) Check your UNIFY course listings to confirm that the changes your department requested are correct. Please pay particular attention to the following:
- For new courses that list the NEW 4 digit number:
- Verify that the course number, course title, and course descriptions are accurate. Make any changes as necessary.
- For any prerequisites, co-requisites, and course descriptions that refer to the old 4 digit number, update these references with the new 4 digit number.
- This is the only version of the course that should be updated.
- Note: The Q prefix is a temporary placeholder in advance of the new double-digit prefix to be implemented in July. Please do not make any changes to the prefix code for courses that are listed with a Q prefix.
- For original courses that list the OLD 4 digit number:
- Add a reference to the new 4 digit number to the beginning of the course description, using the following statement: "As of academic year 2016-17, this course is now _______." (For example: "As of academic year 2016-17, this course is now AHIS 1007.)
- Please do not delete these courses from UNIFY, as they need to remain in the system for archival purposes.
- Please do not make any further changes to this version of the course.
- If you have any questions regarding UNIFY, please contact Karen Jung at kf257@columbia.edu.
- For new courses that list the NEW 4 digit number:
- (2) If you make any reference to specific course numbers on your unit's website, please check if any course listing needs to be updated with a new 4 digit course number in preparation for fall '16. Please also check references to courses offered by other departments or units as those may also have changed.
- For your information, a list of units that have made changes to their 4 digit numbers is provided below. The specific list of courses with new 4 digit numbers which includes both the current course number as well as the new 4 digit number can be accessed here.
Please note that the Directory of Classes will go live on March 21 and the first day of registration for fall '16 is April 18.
Please do not hesitate to contact either Hazel May at hm2135@columbia.edu or Rose Razaghian at rr222@columbia.edu with any questions about this matter or if we can be of assistance.
