College policy requires departmental approval from the major department for all courses taken outside of the Columbia College curriculum if students wish such classes to be counted towards the major or concentration. This includes:
- Summer school classes – at Columbia University or at another institution. The Office of Academic Affairs publishes a list of Columbia Summer Session classes that are approved for general College credit. Courses that are not approved for College credit may not be used for major credit.
- Classes taken at other universities, including those taken during an approved study abroad program.
- Graduate courses that do not appear in the Columbia College Bulletin which students wish to use towards their major requirement.
- Most courses in other divisions of the University also require the approval of the Dean in the particular division.
Please consult the Columbia College Bulletin for further information, and refer your students to this section.
