Students who wish to receive major credit for courses taken at other institutions – during a summer session, study abroad, or classes taken prior to matriculation at Columbia – must first receive approval from the Advising Centers for College credit. They should then submit their requests for major credit and the appropriate syllabi directly to you for review.
Where possible, students requesting major credit for classes to be taken during an approved study abroad program should submit their requests before enrolling in the courses, with final approval contingent upon their successful completion of the course (see Study Abroad Requirements, Policies, and Procedures).
While credit for courses taken through study abroad or at another institution may be transferred to the Columbia College transcript for College Credit with a passing grade of C- or better, students must have received a B- or better for courses that they petition for Core requirements, for example Major Cultures and the Science Requirement. Departments may also use such discretion in awarding major credit for courses taken abroad or at another institution.
