Columbia College has announced the names of 95 seniors who will be initiated into Phi Beta Kappa, the national honor society, on May 21. The students were chosen by a faculty selection committee of Phi Beta Kappa members based on the breadth, depth and rigor of their academic programs, as well as recommendations from faculty members who have worked closely them.

Columbia College student athletes were among those honored at the 15th annual Academic Achievement Luncheon hosted by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education on April 9. The luncheon celebrated 181 student athletes and recent graduates from the College, the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, General Studies and Barnard who made Dean’s list at their schools within the past year.

The Columbia College Committee on Honors, Awards and Prizes has announced the names of the Class of 2013 valedictorian and salutatorian. The valedictorian is Leah Friedman, a Russian Literature and Cultures major from New York. The salutatorian is Yoshiaki Ko, a Neuroscience and Behavior major from California.

Tony Award-winning playwright Terrence McNally CC ’60, one of the American theater’s most acclaimed writers, will deliver the keynote address at the 2013 Columbia College Class Day ceremony. The annual event, which honors graduating seniors, will take place on Tuesday, May 21, 2013, on the South Lawn of Columbia’s Morningside Heights campus.

Kevin Shollenberger, Dean of Student Affairs for Columbia College and The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, will be leaving Columbia to become Vice Provost for Student Affairs at Johns Hopkins University. Terry Martinez, Dean of Community Development and Multicultural Affairs, will serve as Interim Dean of Student Affairs.

Five students from the Class of 2015 have been accepted into the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship program. Established by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the MMUF program provides faculty mentorship and research opportunities  for undergraduates who plan to pursue careers in academia.

Nicholas Dames, Theodore Kahan Professor of Humanities and chair of the Department of English and Comparative Literature, will receive the 2013 Mark Van Doren Award for excellence in teaching, and Boris Gasparov, Boris Bakhmeteff Professor of Russian and East European Studies, will receive the 2013 Lionel Trilling Book Award for his book, Beyond Pure Reason: Ferdinand de Saussure's Philosophy of Language and Its Early Romantic Antecedents, at an awards ceremony in Low Library on May 8. The honorees are selected annually by a student committee to honor faculty members for their contributions in the classroom and in print.
