Environmental Chemistry
Description:
Shawnee is an Environmental Chemistry major with a special interest in carbon sequestration and polar sciences. Shawnee first got involved in research in high school, when she interned at UCSF under Dr. Su Guo in the neurobiology department, developing transgenic model species for researching dopamine's role in regulating the stress axis. At Columbia, she has assisted in paleoclimate research at Lamont-Doherty Earth Obsevatory (LDEO) under Dr. Pratigya Polissar, Dr. Billy D'Andrea, and Dr. Kevin Uno and researched novel water sanitation methods under Dr. Kartik Chandran in Dept of Earth and Environmental Engineering. Currently, her research is supervised by Dr. Peter Kelemen and Dr. Wade McGillis from LDEO and looks at understanding chemical enhancement of reactive gases in natural systems, with intended applications in carbon sequestration. In the future, she hopes to pursue a graduate degree in the polar sciences, with a focus on the natural and anthropogenic (i.e. pollutants) chemistry in the cryosphere.
