Columbia College senior Brian Lewis was recognized in November at The Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students for his poster presentation on "Combination of Chitosan and Dextran as a Novel Gene Delivery System.” The Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students is the largest, professional conference for biomedical and behavioral students.
Alex Frouman ’12 has received a 2012 Marshall Scholarship, which will finance him to study for up to three years towards a graduate degree in the United Kingdom. Frouman, who is majoring in math and concentrating in economics, is member of the University Senate and co-chair of the senate’s Student Affairs Committee. He hopes to study economics at Oxford.
The Center for Career Education is holding three "Get the Internship" workshops this Friday to help students find a summer internship in a variety of fields. The workshops are entitled “Get the Internship: On Campus Recruiting Program,” “Get the Internship: How to Fund an Unpaid Internship,” and “Get the Internship: Develop an Effective Plan." They will take place in Room 501 of the Northwest Corner Building.
Social activist and educator Geoffrey Canada, President and Chief Executive Officer of Harlem Children’s Zone, will speak at the Kenneth Cole Community Engagement Forum at Columbia University's Miller Theater on Friday, Oct. 28th. The forum is the culminating event of the 2011 Kenneth Cole Community Engagement Program, a new initiative of Columbia College and Columbia Engineering that seeks to inspire and empower the next generation of community leaders and help students become effective agents of change. The program is run in partnership with fashion designer and Columbia parent Kenneth Cole.
Columbia College's Rabi Scholars will present their research at the Sixth Annual Rabi Scholars Program Science Research Symposium on Friday, September 23, from noon to 2 p.m., in the Satow Room of Lerner Hall.
Chemistry Professor James Valentini will assume the responsibilities of Dean of the College and Vice President for Undergraduate Education on an interim basis.
The Columbia Global Scholars Program (GSP) offers highly motivated students a new opportunity to investigate global issues through the perspective of Paris/Europe. GSP students will be motivated to delve into another society and culture as they pursue their own projects, challenged to test their own goals against other peoples’ educational and intellectual systems, and supported to develop a range of research, language, and networking skills to help them in this innovative intellectual endeavor.
May 18th will mark Ms. Booth's last day at Columbia in the Office of Fellowship Programs and Study Abroad. She and her husband, who will be home from his final tour in Afghanistan at the end of May, are moving to San Diego, California where he will next be stationed. She thanks all the students, administrators, and faculty who have made her three years at Columbia so enjoyable. Please stop by the office to say farewell.
Due to the academic calendar and the fellowship application cycle, we will be moving to open hours for this final month of the school year. If you would like to speak with Dean Pippenger or Ms. Booth about a fellowship application or opportunity, please note that we will now be offering Open Office Hours in May every Friday from 9 am until 1 pm. Students will be seen on a first come first serve basis and will be allotted up to 25 minutes per meeting. We look forward to seeing you during those hours!
