Columbia College mourns the loss of Bill Campbell CC’62, TC’64, former chair of the University Trustees and former captain and coach to the Columbia Lions football team, who passed away on Monday at the age of 75. “We are devastated by the loss of Bill Campbell,” said James J. Valentini. “Bill was a remarkable entrepreneur, a dedicated and generous Columbia College alumnus; and a committed friend, adviser and mentor to me. He enriched the lives of many at Columbia and throughout the world and he will be missed by all who knew him.”

Max Lawton CC’16, a Russian Literature and Culture major who was raised in Brussels, Chicago and Milwaukee, has received the prestigious Clarendon Scholarship from the University of Oxford to pursue a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Modern Languages, where he will focus on Russian literature.

Felix Qiaochu Jin CC’16, a biochemistry and physics major from Rochester, N.Y., and Zoey Poll CC’16, an urban studies major from Los Angeles, have been named  valedictorian and salutatorian, the top academic honors for the Columbia College Class of 2016.  The awardees were selected by the faculty Committee on Honors, Awards and Prizes based on the strength, breadth, depth and rigor of their academic achievements, as well as on evidence of their intellectual promise, character and achievement outside the classroom.

Valentini has appointed Lisa Hollibaugh GSAS’05 as Dean of Academic Planning and Administration, effective July 1. Hollibaugh will oversee the College academic administration and the Core Curriculum, as well as the James H. and Christine Turk Berick Center for Student Advising.

The Academic Awards Committee of Columbia College is pleased to announce the 2016 winners of the student-nominated Lionel Trilling Book Award and Mark Van Doren Award for Teaching. Susan Pedersen, the Gouverneur Morris Professor of History, will be awarded the 41st annual Lionel Trilling Book Award, for her recent book, The Guardians: The League of Nations and the Crisis of Empire. Liza Knapp, associate professor of Slavic Languages, will be honored with the 55th annual Mark Van Doren Award for Teaching, for her unparalleled dedication to both the Department of Slavic Languages and the Core Curriculum. The honorees are selected annually by a committee of Columbia College students. They will receive their awards at a ceremony at on May 4, at 6 p.m., in Faculty Room, Low Library. All are invited to attend.
