I am an English PhD candidate; my research focuses on queer Afro-diasporic women writing, storytelling, and performance through the 20th and 21st century (specifically, from the U.S and Caribbean). I have experience teaching undergraduate courses in first-year writing and composition, the evolution and expansion of racism through the study of archives/archival material, social justice movements, language liberation, and hip hop literacy/ies. I am a born and raised native New Yorker who uses my experience growing up in the city to influence my approach to writing and research. Specifically, my interest in African American Vernacular English (AAVE) or Black English stems from a personal unlearning of code switching within formal academic and professional spaces. I allow my vocation and avocation to meet at the center of research pursuits and writing practices. This allows me to tackle my writing with a free voice. I aim to use my learned, and continuous, practice of freedom within language, rhetorical style, and expression to help students that come to the writing center to connect with their own voice(s), language(s), and identity/ies.
