“The Unsex’d Females: A Poem,” by Richard Polwhele, title page, 1800.

Published in 1800, “The Unsex’d Females: A Poem,” was a a satire written by the Cornish clergyman and poet Richard Polwhele in response to William Godwin’s memoirs of Wollstonecraft.  It centered on what Polwhele saw as the increasing influence of radical French political ideals in British society, particularly through the nascent women’s rights movement.
