Balliol College, Oxford University

Relates to:

Balliol College, founded in 1263 is one of Oxford University’s oldest and most well-known colleges.  Adam Smith studied at Balliol from 1740-46 as a Snell Exhibitionist (a post-graduate scholarship granted to graduates of Glasgow University).  Although Smith wrote rather critically of the Oxford instructors in his Wealth of Nations, he did manage to use his stay at Balliol to develop the seeds of his mature thoughts on human nature and social commerce.
