Cincinnatus in Retirement, by James Gillray, 1782.

This caricature by James Gillray lampoons Burke’s support of the 1778 Relief Act, which ameliorated, to some degree, the discrimination against Catholics.  Burke is depicted here as an Irish Jesuit eating out of a relic filled with potatoes, the symbol of Irish poverty. While not actually a Catholic, this etching reveals the widespread prejudice against both the Irish and Catholics that Burke would have faced in English society.
