In this tone poem, subtitled Fantastiche variationen über ein Thema ritterlichen Charakters, (Fantastic Variations on a Theme of Knightly Character), Strauss bases each variation on a tale of Don Quixote. The form of the tone poem includes an Introduction, theme and 10 variations of the theme and a finale, where Don Quixote dies. The piece was first performed in Cologne in 1898.
