The most famous Mesopotamian hero is Gilgamesh (sometimes Bilgamesh), early dynastic Sumerian king of Uruk (Unuk). He may have been deified during his lifetime (c. 2650 BCE) because he built the walls of Uruk and defended the city against Kish, a rival city.
