Henry III of France was a key figure in the French Wars of Religion. As commander of the army before acceeding to the throne, he took part in major battles and was involved in the plotting behind the St Bartholomew's Day Massacre, in which thousands of Huguenots (French Protestants) were killed by Catholics. Montaigne served under Henry, who also confirmed his appointment as Mayor of Bordeaux in 1581.
