Robert Pippin: 2004 University of Chicago Ryerson Lecture, "Bourgeois Philosophy? On the Problem of Leading a Free Life."

This is the first part of a lecture by the historian of philosophy, Robert Pippin, about the definition and historical development of the ideal of freedom in Western thought, with particular references to the tradition of German Idealism, to which Hegel belonged. Pippin’s focus on the importance of history for understanding philosophy is in its own way a very hegelian stance.
