Saladin, by an Anonymous Artist, c. 1300

Relates to:

Saladin, by an Anonymous Artist, c. 1300.

Anonymous Medieval illustration of Saladin, sultan of Egypt who figured prominently in the Crusades. This illustration picks up on the European perception of Saladin as a larger than life ruler, a perception that does not fall prey to the kinds of prejudice or caricature one might expect. Dante places him in a privileged position in Limbo in the Divine Comedy. He also appears in two of Boccaccio's stories, cast in a largely positive light.
