The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie, 1988.
Salman Rushdie’s fourth novel, inspired by the life of Muhammad, ignited controversy after its publication in 1988. Rushdie’s novel used the techniques of magical realism to fictionalize issues drawn from contemporary events and Islamic history. Rushdie’s irreverent depiction of Muhammad led Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran to issue a fatwa calling for Rushdie’s death on February 14, 1989.
