Women of Allah by Shirin Neshat, 1993-7.
Shirin Neshat is an Iranian visual artist based in New York known bestfor her work in film, video and photography. She considers her work an interrogation of Islamic ideology, her images a visual exegesis. Though she began her career as an avowedly neutral artist, as the Iranian regime cited Islamic scripture as it became more repressive, Neshat became more boldly political. This photograph forms part of her Women of Allah series, created between 1993 and 1997.
