Originally a single work divided by the editors of the Septuagint, 1st and 2nd Samuel recount the beginnings of monarchial rule in the Kingdom of Israel. Although the two books are named after the prophet Samuel, Samuel himself appears only in part of 1st Samuel and dies in the middle of the narrative (1 Samuel 25:1).
