“The Syllabic Syllabus ”
From epic poetry to iambic pentameter, LitHum teaches us the importance of diction and word flow in order to most effectively tell a story. In an attempt almost as ambitious as teaching 3,000 years of literature in nine months, we wrote a rap that discusses each LitHum text using a different letter of the alphabet. We were inspired by Blackalicious’ rap “Alphabet Aerobics” because of its wide vocabulary and creative rhymes. We made it our goal to not simply summarize each text but talk about its style, larger themes and messages, using what we learned from class. When we began the project, we agreed that the most productive conversations in LitHum happen when everyone is participating, so we applied this same logic when making this video and made each decision from writing to cinematography as a team. We didn’t settle for a verse or a rhyme unless we thought it best reflected what we had learned about a text.
We hope you enjoy watching this video as much as we enjoyed making it! Full lyrics can be found in the description section of the video.
