Edward W. “Ted” Tayler, the Lionel Trilling Professor in the Humanities Emeritus and special lecturer in English and comparative literature, passed away on April 23. He was 87.

Columbia College has announced the names of 92 seniors who will be initiated into Phi Beta Kappa, the national honor society, on Tuesday, May 15. The students were chosen by a faculty selection committee of Phi Beta Kappa members based on the breadth, depth and rigor of their academic programs, as well as recommendations from faculty members who have worked closely them.

Columbia Athletics honored New England Patriots owner and graduate Robert K. Kraft CC’63 with a special reunion Saturday morning at Campbell Sports Center. The purpose of the event was to thank Kraft for his continued support with the annual Robert K.Kraft Financial Aid Scholarship that he has provided to countless Columbia football players over the years.

The National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP) has awarded 16 College affiliates 2018 NSF Graduate Research Fellowships. Fellowships were offered to 2,000 individuals out of an applicant pool of more than 12,000.

Camille Zimmerman CC’18 has signed a professional contract with the Minnesota Lynx of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA), as announced by the team on Tuesday. Zimmerman will join the reigning WNBA champions at the team's training camp. The Lynx will announce their training camp plans at a later date.

The Academic Awards Committee of Columbia College is pleased to announce the 2018 winners of the student-nominated Lionel Trilling Book Award and Mark Van Doren Award for Teaching. Gareth Williams, the Violin Family Professor of Classics and chair of the Department of Classics, will be awarded the 43rd annual Lionel Trilling Book Award for his book Gauri Viswanathan TC’85, the Class of 1933 Professor of English and Comparative Literature and director of the South Asia Institute, will be honored with the 57th annual Mark Van Doren Award for Teaching for her unparalleled dedication to teaching and to her students.

Eighteen first-year students in Columbia College, Columbia Engineering and the School of General Studies have received 2018 Presidential Global Fellowships. The students, whose academic interests range from political science to the arts, from American studies to computer science, from astrophysics to history, from English literature to history, and from sustainable development to engineering, were selected from a pool of more than 142 for the University’s undergraduate global summer fellowship program.
