Dr. Emlyn Hughes, Professor of Physics at Columbia University, seeks to recruit four Columbia College first-year students to take part in a summer research project on nuclear proliferation.  The multi-disciplinary research will use science, social science and the humanities. You do not need to be a science student to participate – both science students and non-science students are encouraged to apply.

Jacques Barzun ’27, ’32 GSAS, noted cultural historian and University Professor Emeritus, was among the 10 winners of the 2010 National Humanities Medals for outstanding achievement in history, literature, education and cultural policy, President Barack Obama ’83 announced. The medals were presented at a ceremony in the East Room of the White House on March 2, 2011.

Alexandra Wallace Creed ’88, senior v.p. of NBC News, will address the Class of 2011 at Class Day, Tuesday, May 17, on South Lawn. Creed is only the second female Class Day speaker. Creed has been honored with 11 News and Documentary Emmy Awards as well as a Gracie Award and a Peabody. She was presented a John Jay Award for distinguished professional achievement in 2008 from the College.

The Herbert Deresiewicz Summer Research Fellowship will provide support for a Columbia College, Barnard College, or School of Engineering and Applied Sciences undergraduate student to engage in full-time laboratory research in the Columbia University Departments of Biological Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering.  The Fellowship recipient will receive a stipend of $7,500.

The Freeman Indonesia Nonprofit Internship Program (FINIP) aims to develop student leaders and strengthen the nonprofit sector in Indonesia. IIE will select and pair 10 Indonesian students pursuing U.S. degrees with 10 U.S. undergraduates and arrange internships for them to work together in an Indonesian nonprofit organization.
