This fellowship fund was established by the Class of 1939 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of its graduation. Each fellowship provides funds for students to pursue independent research or to qualify as assistants in on-going laboratory projects over the summer at a location of their choosing. Students are expected to carry out this research under the supervision of a faculty member from Columbia who will be required to sponsor the project and provide advice before, during, and after the period of the research. The fellowship’s intent is to give students the opportunity to pursue their intellectual goals, gain valuable research experience, and cultivate stronger relationships with a faculty member.
Funds will be awarded in amounts ranging from $500 to $5000, depending on the budget required for each project. Awards cannot be used for the completion of formal coursework.
Eligibility is limited to current sophomores and juniors in Columbia College.
If you receive a Class of 1939 Summer Research Fellowships, you will be expected to present your findings at a College-wide symposium held during the following academic year. You may also be asked to speak at an information session for interested students.
We encourage you to attend the Symposium to be held this spring before you apply for these awards—contact the Office of Fellowship Programs for information on event time and location. If you are unable to attend the Symposium, we encourage you to stop by Office of Fellowship Programs drop-in hours (606 Kent) on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m.
