Alumni in the News: March 7, 2022

A March 3 New York Times article “The History of Trivia and Why Netflix is Jumping Into the Game” references Edwin Goodgold ’65. Goodgold, who died in May 2021, raised the profile of trivia contests from a college parlor game to a global phenomenon.

On March 1, The Washington Post reviewed One Damn Thing After Another, the new memoir by former U.S. Attorney General William Barr ’71, GSAS’79. The Post writes, “Barr can tell a good yarn and has a penchant for deadpan punchlines.”


In The New York Times on February 27, Emily Tamkin ’12 wrote the guest essay “How the American Right Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Russia.” Tamkin is the U.S. senior editor at the New Statesman.

An exhibition of artwork by Ad Reinhardt CC 1935 and James Turrell is at the Pace Gallery in Chelsea through March 19. Reinhardt is a subject of the February 24 Times article “James Turrell Takes Up Curating, With a Show by His Hero.”

On February 22, The New York Times reviewed Three Months, a film written and directed by Jared Frieder ’12. The Times called the coming-of-age comedy “a sensitive and surprisingly buoyant depiction of H.I.V. in contemporary society.”


Dean Baquet was the subject of a February 18 New Yorker feature, “Dean Baquet Never Wanted to Be an Editor.” Baquet, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and the executive editor of The New York Times since 2014, is expected to retire this year. He was the Class Day speaker in 2016.

I Want You Back, a romantic comedy starring Jenny Slate ’04 and Charlie Day, premiered on Amazon Prime Video on February 12. Slate and Day play recently dumped thirtysomethings who try to sabotage their exes’ new relationships.

On February 11, The Wall Street Journal announced that Jennifer Cho ’01 was promoted to CEO of The Wing, a women-focused workspace collective. Cho joined The Wing as chief marketing officer in July 2021.


Nominations for the 94th Academy Awards were announced on February 8: Maggie Gyllenhaal ’99 is a nominee for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Lost Daughter; Jessica Kingdon ’09 is a nominee for Best Documentary (Feature) for the film Ascension. West Side Story, with a screenplay by Tony Kushner ’78, is nominated for several awards, including Best Picture. The Oscars ceremony will be broadcast on March 27.

Claire Shanley ’92 is a producer on the historical drama The Gilded Age, which premiered on HBO Max on January 24.
