2018 Presidential Global Fellowship winners announced

Eighteen first-year students in Columbia College, Columbia Engineering and the School of General Studies have received 2018 Presidential Global Fellowships. The students, whose academic interests range from political science to the arts, from American studies to computer science, from astrophysics to history, from English literature to history, and from sustainable development to engineering, were selected from a pool of more than 142 for the University’s undergraduate global summer fellowship program.

College alumni are making their marks in the business world. David Chubak ’02 was named to Crain’s New York Business’ 40 under 40 list; Chubak is head of global retail banking and mortgage for Citibank. Sam Waldo ’10 was named to the 2018 Forbes' 30 Under 30 – Asia list in the social entrepreneurs category; Waldo is co-founder and CEO of Mantra Eyewear.

Earl Hall listed on National Register of Historic Places

Columbia University’s Earl Hall was recently listed on the National Register of Historic Places, in recognition of Earl Hall as a venue for meetings and dances of Columbia’s Student Homophile League, which was the first gay student organization in the country.

No Spectators: The Art of Burning Man” debuts on March 30 at Washington, D.C.’s Renwick Gallery. Stephanie Stebich ’88, The Margaret and Terry Stent Director of the Smithsonian American Art Museum and Renwick Gallery, said in a press release, “The Renwick Gallery and Burning Man are both creative laboratories where innovators go to play and to push the boundaries of their art. The experimental, participatory artwork of Burning Man reflects the Renwick Gallery’s focus on new directions in craft and making.” The large-scale, immersive show will be on display until January 21, 2019. “My challenge is to remind people that there is a vast country beyond the Eastern Seaboard that we need to be in conversation with, and we need to reflect [those areas’] creativity, inspirations and aspirations,” Stebich told CCTlast fall.

On March 7 The New York Times published an interview with playwright Tony Kushner ’78 about the upcoming Broadway revival of his Pulitzer Prize and Tony-winning work, Angels in America. In “Tony Kushner, at Peace? Not Exactly. But Close.”, Kushner discusses his current projects (including new plays in the works) and how the 26-year-old Angels in America still “feels very much of the moment.”
