Several Lions made an appearance at the Golden Globe Awards on January 7, with investigative reporter Jodi Kantor ’96 asking insightful questions on the red carpet and activist Ai-Jen Poo ’96attending as the guest of Meryl Streep. Eli Bush ’09, a producer of Lady Bird, came away a winner when the film won in the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category. Photographer Damon Winter ’97 was on hand to photograph the event; he was also featured in The New York Times’ “The Year in Pictures,” a roundup of the best photos of 2017.

The Roger Lehecka Double Discovery Center appoints new executive director

Columbia College has appointed Kecia Hayes, a Teachers College alumna with more than 20 years of education experience, as the new executive director of the Roger Lehecka Double Discovery Center (DDC), a program that works to enhance higher education opportunities for local low-income and first-generation youth ages 12–27.

Rujeko Hockley ’05 was chosen to co-curate the Whitney Biennial, opening spring 2019. Inaugurated in 1932, the Biennial is the longest-running continual survey of contemporary American art. In a press release announcing the event, Scott Rothkopf, the Whitney’s deputy director for programs and the Nancy and Steve Crown Family Chief Curator, said: “Jane [Panetta, the co-curator] and Ru are two of the most compelling and engaged curatorial voices of our moment, with broad and sensitive instincts for artistic and cultural relevance.”

On October 5, 2017, Jodi Kantor CC’96’s seminal article in The New York Times, co-authored with Megan Twohey, about the decades of sexual harassment complaints against Harvey Weinstein was published. It helped launch the national conversation about sexual misconduct that’s dominated the news cycle this fall, from scandals involving high-powered executives and celebrities to an outpouring of stories from women and men using the hashtag #MeToo. Columbia College awarded University Trustee Jonathan S. Lavine CC’88 the Alexander Hamilton Medal on November 16 at a black-tie dinner held in Low Rotunda. The medal is the highest honor awarded to a member or members of the College community for distinguished service to the College and accomplishment in any field of endeavor.
